At age 24 I woke up one morning to a very unfamiliar place with people I had never seen before all around me, two of which had come to sedate and take me to a room where doctors administered electric shock treatments. Somehow I had lost four months of my life and existence and was placed in a jacket where I could not move. Frightened, I fought with all of my strength to resist their efforts to control me! I lost. The next thing I knew I was awake and completely unaware of all that had just happened. This scenario would repeat itself numerous times for over a year.

Mental Illness had invaded my life and taken control. Through the tragic death of my little 3 year-old baby girl I had gone into a catatonic state and my world caved into a dark abyss. And so began a 12 year journey of anger, hurt, isolation and disillusionment with God. All of which I had convinced myself, was recovery, but in reality I was running from God, holding Him responsible for it all.

Did you know that one in every four adults and one in five adolescents are affected by mental illness? Sadly there are no quick fixes. It is a journey but it doesn't have to be traveled alone.

About three or four years ago I was sitting in church and Pastor Jerry announced that we were starting a new ministry here at Cornerstone which could help those struggling with mental health challenges. At that moment I knew I was to be involved. In that same moment, I also knew God was about to use all that He had allowed in my life.

If you have ever wondered if there is hope, help, or a place to go for a faith-based support group that addressed mental illness, there is!! Here at Cornerstone you have found that place. We have a group called Living Grace for those with mental health challenges and a group called Family Grace for loved ones who support those struggling with these issues. In these groups you will receive wisdom, love and compassion and know that God is in control.

You will learn that you are not the illness. Mental illness is part of your journey and God is not intimidated by it. You are a Child of God fully cherished, loved and accepted by Him. And He longs to reveal His compassion and hope in step of this journey.

I am still learning to let grace be my guide as I walk towards greater mental health resiliency and life renewal. I now understand that some changes will be immediate, while others will take time but I now give myself grace to do what I can without the expectancy of perfection.
