If you know me (Kortnie Maxoutopoulis), you know that my move to Long Beach was one that came from a heart of obedience to the Lord, and required complete faith in His plan. As I’ve grown into my platform of serving the Lord here at the Beach, I have experienced my deeper call from the Lord to “go and make disciples”: not just spreading the name of the Lord Jesus Christ but also equipping Christians with the ability to discern God’s true character and grow in reverence and love and obedience to Him.

As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, our weekly college bible study (CBS) has been diving into the Fruits of the Spirit as detailed in Galatians. Paul draws a contrast between the works of our flesh and the fruit of the Spirit, commanding us to “walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16). Yet in studying the book of Galatians, one knows that it is not simply by our own power that we can die to the flesh, and live to the Spirit – rather it is because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and our new identity in Him that our lives are transformed by the Spirit and fruit is manifested. As Believers, it is crucial that we know and understand this fundamental Truth.

Soon after the start of our weekly study, my heart was moved for the ladies in our college group. As I began to get to know each of them better and hear their hearts, I could see a desire for them to go deeper in their faith… yet they admitted they did not know where to start. The combination of this desire and the Truth of God’s Word aligned in the perfect way to present a platform to begin an intensive 6-week newly inductive study through the book of Galatians – they eagerly said YES!

We have explored: Paul’s command to commit to spreading the gospel alone and not trade the truth for any other gospel; our freedom from the law because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ; our new nature as daughters and heirs with Christ; and the life we now live in the Spirit as opposed to the flesh. Growing in knowledge of our Father is one of the greatest blessings we have been given, because it is His power to unveil to us the knowledge of His Truth in which we even have the privilege to live by faith. It has been an honor and a wonderful journey walking alongside these ladies diving deeper into the life-changing Truth of God’s Word. This semester is part of a grander season, but it has been one of encouragement and growth as our hearts have been filled with a greater wisdom and reverence for God and the Kingdom while growing in a community of believers.
